Non-Native Plants of Famosa Slough
Listed are some of the many non-native plants that still may be found in Famosa Slough. Over 80 non-native (exotic, or invasive) species were identified here by biologists in 1990. Many, such as pampas grass, palms, eucalyptus, and giant reed, have been eradicated through a program aimed at eliminating the most pervasive or most harmful plants. Volunteers continue to work to remove the rest and replace them with native plants.
While many invasive plants are attractive and are sold in commercial nurseries, they are not beneficial to the native species of plants and animal. Unchecked, they will (as they have done in the past) crowd out native plants that provide natural food sources and nesting areas for birds.
